Thanks for stopping by...This is where I will be recording my thoughts and observations. I am writing this from my home in sunny Texas. My name is Bill Benninghoff and the most important thing about me is my relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He is my Lord and my Savior. I am husband to the beautiful Molly and father to Jennifer, David and Daniel.

I enjoy reading books on theology, so many of my posts will be theological or philosophical in content. I am 47 years old now and I have been a born-again Christian since the age of 17 so I have seen the Lord move in many different church contexts over the years. I am excited by what is currently happening in Lakeland, Florida and in Fort Mill, South Carolina since April of 2008. I think the Lord Jesus is increasing the level of healings and miracles in the North American church. Currently I am meeting with some good friends in an organic church format. I am a big fan of the writings of Frank Viola and Wolfgang Simson regarding the organic church movement.

Are We Preaching the Apostolic Gospel?

What is the apostolic gospel?  I suggest it is the good news that was proclaimed by the apostles of Jesus in the first century.  The word "apostle" comes from the Greek meaning "sent one."   The apostles were the messengers chosen and sent by Jesus to proclaim the message of good news.  I received much of my inspiration for this study from Scott McKnight's excellent book, "The King Jesus Gospel." I highly recommend his book for further s tudy. What Does Salvation Really Mean? (Part Two)

In part one of this study on salvation, I wrote about the confusion that we 21 st century folks run into when we read the Bible.   We often read meanings into words that are really not there in the original languages.     Even when we do understand the original meanings of the words, we often add meanings from our 21 st century Christian traditions that the author of those words never intended to convey. We do this so easily that we are not even aware of it. The word “salvation” is a prime example.   When many Christians hear the word salvation, they tend to think of God’s actions in forgiving our sins, giving us His Divine life and placing us in his family.   While it is true that God does all these things for us, the Biblical word salvation in both the Old and New Testaments simply means “rescue.”   I think it is important to reclaim the true Biblical definitions of words like “salvation”, “repentance” and “kingdom” to help us remove the layers of religious tradition that cov

Why is the Kingdom of God Good News, Part Two

In my last post I began to share why the Kingdom of God is such good news.  I would like to continue in that vein a bit here.   I would like to share with you the wonder of the message of Jesus.  This message is something that radically transformed my life 30 years ago, and it continues to transform me today. Last time I pointed out that when Jesus began to proclaim his message to the nation of Israel under Roman occupation in the 1 st century, he said that they were to change their thinking because the Kingdom of God was present and available.
